A documentary is a film about a person or persons, living of dead or about historical events. To be a true documentary, it must not show re-enactments or bring actors to play the role of this or that character.

Where a documentary uses actors to play scenes, this then becomes a docudrama and strictly speaking is veering away from what history might have actually said about a person or persons or an historical event.

To me a documentary is something where the presenter aims to educate the watcher about a certain subject. This can be done by including the use of old and/or new pictures/film, interviews with people who were there or involved, and experts on the subject. Archaeological finds etc if it is on ancient history.

In brief an educational program.

A documentary should do these:

Educate with trustworthy research and facts.

It should document its subject matter in the most natural manner, causing little or no interference to situations/ environments/ wildlife/ cultures etc.

It can be entertaining and artistic - and it should be - but it should be about something real and not be confused with reality TV (which is not real but is really about constructed situations).

Ace examples of great documentaries: Anything hosted by David Attenborough; The Celts; Wildlife On One; many of the National Geographic programmes; Child Of Our Time.

A documentary film is one that depicts an event, told in the medium of film with narration. The film is often archival but can be newly shot, depending on the event. It is supposed to be a truthful account of events as they happened.

a film, no script, they film it as they see it, they usually don't know what's going to happen either unless it's a historical documentary.
