The length of the claws is the primary way to tell the difference between males and females, as they are much longer in males. See Sexing Red Eared Sliders for other details that can help you tell the difference. The differences are not marked until they read sexual maturity, though. Male red eared sliders have much longer claws on their front feet than females. As well, the tail of males is longer and thicker. The cloaca is located farther from the body in males, and males also may have a slightly concave (curved inward) plastron.

IT depends how old your turtle is. He/she has to be at least 5 years old to tell. all that plastron[bottom of the shell] smooth and nails longer all of that is diffucult to see. the true way to tell is that male butt opening is closer to the end of the tail while female is closer to the body at the end of the tail.

I know that with tortoises, the males have a concave belly, and the females have flat ones.

With most turtles its the shell shape. Males will be more rounded and females are flatter in the back.
