A documentary film is a non-fiction film that describes a situation, condition, or event that occurred, or is occurring. It often includes opinion, and can be made with the explicit intention of convincing or persuading the audience of a particular viewpoint or position on the situation being documented.
A documentary usually (but not always) includes interviews with experts, or with ordinary people affected by the event or situation, or both. It generally does not include actors, though it may also include re-enactments, especially if the event or situation being documented is historic. For example, a documentary about the assassination of Caesar might include segments of actors dressed as Brutus, Cassius, Cinna and the other conspirators, and may even include a re-enactment of Caesar's death.
Documentaries may also be made in a balanced manner -- that is, presenting arguments on both sides of an issue, almost in a debate format, which allows the audience to review issues on both sides of a controversy and make up their own minds.

A documentary film should be one that records a current situation or relates a past situation. The film should be essentially based on provable, factual information although some simulations and speculations may be acceptable in order to support the underlying theme of the film. While the producers of the film should ideally be neutral, this is typically not the case and should not detract from the base theme of the film as long as the biases are noted for the viewing public.

A documentary should be a study of a real life situation. Many documentaries favour investigative reporter techniques that highlight the main details and actively probe the situation for good shots and sounds that will hold the attention of an audience.
A good documentary informs and educates about its subject. It also entertains and keeps the audience coming back for more. Not all of them make the grade.

A documentary film is a film which documents things as they happen. There is essentially no script, and the "acting" is incidental, rather than pre-meditated.

A Documentary should be exactly what the name suggests, but they are very often bias and have also been used as an important tool in propaganda wars, Unfortunately a lot of people accept all points made in a documentary as fact without analysing it in a subjective manner.
