I been working for a company(Construction company as a concrete laborer), all the guys that work there are all older than me. I’m only 18. So sometimes they are kind of in a way mean to me. But yesterday, I felt really out of place. I went to the bathroom and came back. And they made a really crappy. The guy that was in charge made a joke(that would offend any African Amer.). And knowing that I’m the only African American there even made it worst. Everyone is laughing, and the only thing I could do is just walk away. The boss and the supervisor wasn’t there, because they was on vacation. But the person who the supervisor put in charge, was the one who made the joke. Only one of the guys struck up for me and told him it wasn’t right for him to say that. They just continue to laugh. Well I turned around and walked away. Could this company get in trouble or possible sued for making remarks that would offend a African American? I’m just about sick of all the crap. When I wake up in the mornings and knowing I have to deal with them from 5-5 all day kind of don’t make me want to go in. But I have to because I have a life and things need to be taken care of.

Racial harrassment. And yes, the company can get in trouble for it.

Talk to your boss, his boss, etc. Seek a legal solution or file a formal complaint if all that doesn't work. If all else fails, find another job.

Good luck!

As a former Human Resource Manager for a large company, and the first African American the company ever hired - I can feel your pain. Unfortunately, people in the business of construction and other blue-collar type jobs don't always familarize themselves with the laws of the land - and sometimes you'll find those jobs contain more of the "good ole boys" element. But you can do something about it and the law is on your side. You must maintain some accurate documentation citing the date, time and place of the offence, who said it, and their exact words. Take this information to your immediate supervisor and ask for his advise on how 'he' would handle any further nonsense. (This will give you some idea as to how 'he' thinks) Nevertheless, he has an obligation to inform the workers of the law regarding harrassment. If you are not satisfied with the results or find that your reporting has increased the level of disrespect towards you, contact your local NAACP, or an attorney who deals with harrassment in the workplace. This is how I would handle the situation legally - but there is another side. I would show these fellows all the love I knew. You 'kill' people with love and kindness no matter how badly they treat you. It's a difficult task, but I have learned that people sometimes are just ignorant and you have to be bigger than they are. The book I read tells me that I have to go and treat these people the way that Jesus treated me - on the cross - by his death and blood - forgiving me for all I commited against him. We are commanded to go and do the same. It can be hard - but if you plant love in your heart -and allow it to grow up in you, as a young man - you'll find you will be the better for it. Think about all that Martin Luther King, Jr. did for the sake of change. You're in a position that you can work it with love. Try it. I encourage you and pray for your success.

What has transpired at your place of work is not only immoral, but illegal in ANY State!!

When the owner gets back, you need to discuss this situation with him!

You also can immediately go to the Department of Civil Rights (state) in your State and file a formal complaint. Additionally, go to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (federal) and file a formal complaint.

Don't second guess your decision to do this. This makes me VERY upset that this has happend to you!

speak with your boss and file a complaint, and keep track of how its dealt with. if there's a record of this company ignoring racial abuse, a lawsuit can be filed.
