I've got a lot of different heritages I guess you could say. English as well as French on both sides. I have ancestors both from my Dad's side that fought on opposing sides of the French-Indian War. Yeah, they wrote journals and they wrote their families and there are the odd letters they exchanged with each other back and forth (those weren't too civilized as you can imagine.)
It wasn't until I had someone translate the French for me AFTER they recited it in French first that I truly understood the Merovingian's statement in the Matrix about why he loved the French Language. "It's like wiping my bleep with silk."
It sounded really exotic and beautiful hearing it in French. The translation of those words into English caused me to spill my drink over myself I was so shocked. All these years I thought I was the one with the colorful language. I'm no match for my "forefathers" but at least now I know where I got my "talent" from.

I've traced my family back to 894 AD. European decent from time before then is not very reliable as people took on the name of the town they lived in and generally had only a first name. So everyone from a town may have the same name on record . But are in no way blood related.
Funny thing is how ever . I grew up in Chicago and feel more that while my children may look like Vikings they act like the people from the Midwest than Norway

At this day in age, I don't think anyone has a "true" nationality. I live in the US, born and raised, but have a lot of different blood running through my veins. Italian, Irish, Mexican, Indian and German, that is just my Father's side of the family. I have never asked about my Mother's side, maybe I will now.

I live in the USA, but I was born and grew up in England. I am half white and half Indian, but the Indian side of the family lives in Malaysia, where my mother was born and used to live. I identify myself as English and American, but I like to think I'm a woman of the world. :-P
