Jonmcn is right. A serial killer can often be characterized by someone who is a psychopath. Psychopaths typically are defined by being unemotional, callous, unremorseful and trouble makers. These signs in a child (if they are persistent) can sometimes indicate a path toward psychopathy. Psychopaths as children are often cruel to animals, unremorseful, harmful to others, and antisocial. This last point indicates that they often get in trouble for anything from setting fires, to stealing, to lying, to sexually assaulting someone at an early age.

Well you see, it is difficult to determine but most serial killers probably start on their puberty age where the human body undergoes a lot of changes including the mind. So what he or she experienced and believed from this stage can trigger and later when they grew up and became what they are - serial killer. Most victims of serial killings are females so probably he (or she) have had bad experiences regarding females (or males). These "bad experiences" on certain type of females could lead to hidden desire and/or hatred and eventually on a belief that this "type" of females (or males) should not live, thus he (or she) kills them.

Anti-social behaviour "he was a quiet person, kept to himself, never caused any trouble....." They get away with the crimes because they don't attract attention to themselves but sometimes seem begging for the police to stop them. Usually they have some repressed anger, they blame some failure in their life on a family member or authority figure, usually of the opposite sex. If it was so easy to spot a potential serial killer, they would be easier to catch, now wouldn't they?

Forget the term, but, bed wetting, early and extreme. Torturing small animals. Pyromania. The is on average, but not necessary, for any psychopath/sociopath.
