My feeble guess would be that the capital "I"should really have a line above and below it so as to not confuse it with a small case "L." Unfortunately, as you can see, when it is typed on a standard keyboard, you only get "I." What's up with this?

Only Chinese characters are written from left to right, top to bottom.
Since you're writing out English alphabets, the proper way to do it is to list them left to right ..... A B C ... and so on .
