It would be easier to add a second, or "slave" hard drive.. that way, your OS will stay on the first, or "C" drive, and the second HDD will be the "D" drive. When you add software, add it to the "D" drive instead of the "C". You will have to set some jumpers on the HDD's, but there are plenty of do-it-yourself tips on the internet.

Two things will decide the size Hard Drive your machine will handle.
1) The system "bios"
2) The Operating System
I suggest you visit the Compaq site to find the answer to the first question, armed with your machines model / number and current bios version. Their support FAQ section will tell you how to find out what your bios version is.
For the second you will need to visit microsoft's site to check on any size restrictions and work-around's for your OS version.

That is very small compared to the 200GB new models. Oh-well no need to fret. The hassle-free way to do this is simply buy a nice external hard drive like 100GB they are about 1 buck for each gb nice deal! just save your stuff to that. unfortunately if you want to get a new hard drive you are going to have to get a new one for you computer model, and reformat the old one and put everything on the new one. if you dont want to do the external hard drive thing just buy a new computer. it would be more just to add a new hard drive vs. buying a nice new computer.

yes, you should be able to update that, either go into a comp store and tell them what you want and either intall it yourself or pay them to do it... the other option is, if you have a spare USB or Firewire port to use and external which are about $50 - $100 AUD more than there internal equivalent, but let you just plug and play on any computer that you need it to go on, and if at some point you update your computer, its just a matter of unpluging and repluging in the USB cord :)

You can buy a bigger hard drive, and have it put in, its actually really to put in yourself, but you dont sound like you have much experience with computers. I have an 80gb drive and a 20gb drive in my computer.

Try buying an external Harddrive, it will plug into your USB slots, and give you as much memory as you need.
