As previous answers have indicating, watching a movie version helps. I most enjoyed the Mel Gibson version, but that's your own prerogative.
Stop into any bookstore, and look for a copy of Hamlet. There are few Shakespeare novels now that don't include detailed notes on the reverse page and scene by scene summaries. The version I use, from Folger Shakespeare Library (Orange Cover), I picked up at Waldenbooks for under five dollars. Hopefully, understanding the plot will help interest you in it. Good luck. :)

Watching the entire play only takes 3 hours! How long does it take to read it?
And, beware the Hamlet movies, they tend to stray from the script. In some cases, they stray badly.

Try renting a copy of the movie. Shakespeare is difficult to read on your own because of the style of English used. You can also get a copy of the cliff notes for it.

Use sparknotes' No Fear Shakespeare. I know they can be found at Barnes and Noble and probably other bookstores. They have the play and an explanation of it in modern language.

get the book on tape from your library, each character is done in a different voice by a different performer with inflection and emotion it really brings the play to life, also they stick to the text exactly. it usually takes about 3 hours to listen.
