i am looking for a sight that will tell you what planets and star patterns will be visible in an area

The best option is to use planetarium softwares like Starry Night, Cartes du ciel. the Sky etc. Some are commercial, but du ciel is free. Download at the following link

Another site is the Skymaps.com, which offers free download of monthly star charts. It also features a monthly calander giving details and highlights during the month. You might like to give this a try. Simply visit their site and browse.
