Even if you're going to work for an American-based company that conducts all its business in English, you're going be living in Germany. You will have to comminicate with German-speaking residents and associates for a variety of everyday and possibly business-related reasons. It may not be compulsory (depending on what company you are planning on working for), but it sure as heck make your life a lot easier. I would learn to "Sprechen sie Deutsch."
