My partner and I have been together for 20 years. We dont live together at the moment due to work issues.
We were supposed to be at my brother's house at 1:00.
My partner shows up at my house at 12:30. Its a 2 hour drive.
They had eaten without us and fixed us a plate. I was mortified and embaressed. It ruined the holiday for me. How can I keep him from ruining Christmas?

Being on time is a respect issue,
he apparently does not respect you or your family, talk to him about this issue. about respect

You said that you have been together for 20 years?? And this is something new?? Look your family is aware of your lateness at least they fix you and your parter a plate. That shows that they understand. Look My husband and I are the same way. But our motto is if it bothers them that much that we are late then don't invite us. We don't do it on purpose but it just happens. My sister gets angry but why?? Look what she does now is that she tells us a time that we need to be there, but it is sometimes an hour earlier. I am not saying that is what your family should do but hey why not try that on your partner?? Let him know that the christmas festivities start at 9am instead of telling him the real time. you never know it may work. Good luck and if he ruins your holidays go without him.

I've got a great way to handle this. My sister is late for EVERYTHING so whatever time we are supposed to be somewhere say at 4pm I tell her we are supposed to be there at 2pm. Then we get there if not on time only alittle late. But make sure your family knows you are doing this so he won't find out the truth or you can always meet him there so even if he's late you won't be. But I know I find it rude when people are late.

Next time you have someplace to go lie and say you have to be there 3 or 4 hours BEFORE the actual time. I think I read that in Dear Abbey or something?

My SO would leave without me if I was that late. Consider doing that. Maybe next year he'll think again.
