At work I'd go with the $20.00 limit set. Privately I'd do whatever I wanted to & whatever the standard normal was between us.

If there is more than just yourself that is under your boss' managment I would spend no more than the average of what the other employees spend. The reason for this is if you were ever to get a raise or promotion even by your own merit other employees might assume your boss is playing favorites.
The only way around to getting by with spending more money than others on a gift for your boss is to give this gift to your boss away from your place of work and then keep quite about it. Also never include a card with the gift that may be understood as more than coming from just a friend. You don't want to start fires that you never intended to fight in the first place.

Bosses are bosses and should not be your friend...it is business. One of the rules in life is don't become involved with anyone at work because if it ends badly you will need to find a new job.
When it comes time for the office to do a collection for a gift for anyone give no more or less for each. Or do as I do...make it clear you do not participate nor do you want to be remembered. Never any hard feelings using this approach.

A 50 dollar gift card from their favorite store. and/or A pair of tickets for a concert or play that they would like.

how is your boss your best friend? lol. anyway i think you should spend the amount she or he is spending on you. it's only fair. personally i think 25 is the perfect amount!!
