I've never heard of them doing this, but I would expect that it would be because the first stage of labor can take many hours, and the doctor does not feel like you need to be hospitalized until you are in active labor. They would probably use Pitocin, a synthetic version of the hormone Oxytocin to induce contractions and maybe a medication inserted into the vagina to soften and dilate your cervix (probably a few days before Pitocin is introduced) if it is not favorable for delivery.

ok what the dr will probly give you is pills to just help your body start labor and first babies you will be in labor for 10 hrs or more. and most women dont usually go to the hospital till there contractions are kind of close to gether and are uncomfortable. in the hospital they will use an iv. i have had 3 kids and if you are dialated at all id walk and try to not have to be induced im not trying to scare you but if you have to be induced by iv your contractions will be stronger and more painfull than just having your baby with out being induced. my first was induced but my other 2 wasnt and they was easy compared to my first. but maybe you will get lucky and have your baby sunday because my last 2 babys was 6 days late. and my first i was almost 3 wks late b4 they induced me and they wont break your water in a doctors office. if so thats a new one on me but i dont think so

At 36 weeks pregnant with my twins the doctor did what's called a "search and stretch'. Finds the cervix and inserts a finger (or 3!!!) and stretches it open.
Felt like losing my virginity all those years ago again!

1 hour later at home my waters broke.. 1 hour after that I was up at the hospital in full swing labour.

There must be reasons behind it though. My heartrate was all over the place, fluid retention, gestational diabetes and I'd just had enough!

I've had 2 pregnancies induced, but never heard of them starting at the doctor's office. They usually use Pitocin to induce labor, but it is given continuously through an I.V. , so I don't see how you could start in one place and go to another.

Maybe they want you to come in to the doc's office to be checked before they decide if they want to go ahead with sending you to the hospital for the induction.

Someone else mentioned Cytotec. DO NOT consent to the use of Cytotec! This is an "off label" use of the drug that is discouraged by the manufacturer. It is DANGEROUS and there are other induction methods. Cytotec can cause uterine rupture.

Could be they are just "stripping" your membranes, this sometimes brings on labor if your body is ready. I can't see them breaking your water in the doc's office, seems like they would prefer the more sterile enviornment of the hospital for that.

I had my labour induced with the prostaglanding gel. They insert the gel up next to your cervix and you have to aly still for an hour afterwards. You can get up and walk around after and continue on.

maybe they are going to strip your membranes or break your bag of waters.

if you are not comfortable with this then you should say something. this is your birth and your baby and you pay for your health insurance so you are in charge, not the midwife or doctor.

p.s. contratulations!

I'm not really sure what you mean by the first part of your question, but to answer the last part most of the time they use a drug called Cytotec to incude labor.
