In October 2000, the Canadian media were obsessed with U.S. rapper Eminem. The issue was whether or not he should be allowed to enter Canada and give concerts. Eminem's misogynist(showing hatred against women) lyrics describe violent acts against women. Ontario's attorney general asked the federal government to stop Eminem at the border, but federal immigration officials refused. Eminem had never been convicted of any crime, including hate crime. He could not be denied entry into Canada. As police detective Rob Cooper stated, "althoug[ lyrics] can be viewed as offensive, certainly to women, they don't constitute hate propaganda under the Criminal Code." At the time, the definition of hate crimes included race, thnic origin, religion, and sexual orientation, but not gender. Eminem performed his concerts in canada.

I am a believer in free speech and political dissent. I am not however, a person who supports a person entry into a nation should they show in any positive light, the violent abuse of animals, women, men and children.
