The fact that the Cardinals won the World Series is irrelevant. The MVP is based on the regular season, and Ryan Howard had the better season. Also, for the record, the Phillies had the better season (won 2 more games). The Cardinals were just lucky enough to play in the weakest division in baseball. In every other division, they would have placed third, except for the AL East and Central where they would have placed 4th.
--1-- Howard was the superior athlete in 2006. He had more home runs, more RBI's, led his team to more victories (85 wins for the Phillies vs 83 wins for the Cardinals).
--2-- The arguement that says Pujols deserves it because he spent 3 weeks on the DL is asinine. If anything, it proves that Ryan Howard is the more durable and reliable player. Hell, if Bo Jackson never got injured, he might have been the greatest player of all time. Should we have given the MVP from 1992 to 1997 to Bo Jackson simply because he MIGHT have hit better than Barry Bonds IF he stayed healthy? Absolutely not.
--3-- Ryan Howard took a team that had given up at the trading deadline (trading away Lidle AND Abreu to the Yankees) and kept them in the hunt for the wild card single handedly. If Howard was not a Phillie, it is likely they would have finished dead last in the NL East, making Howard BY FAR more valuable than Pujols, who's team played in the weakest division in baseball, and likely would have won the division with or without him.
Bottom line...in 2006, Ryan Howard > Albert Pujols, and Ryan Howard is your 2006 NL MVP.
Ryan Howard is the MVP.
End of story.
Case closed.

Howard, he carried his team and without him they would have been eliminated 30 days earlier. Pujols is great but he had a lot more around him...and for the guy who said that Pujols has been doing it for 5 years, last time I checked the MVP was for 1 year.

I can't believe you even considered Ryan Howard. Pujols totally deserves it.

Albert Pujols. He's a five tool player. You will never hear about Howard's exploits in the field, mainly because he has none. Pujols, however, could be placed at any position and still be cranking out Web Gems.

Thats simple Albert took his team to the World Series and they WON . That is what you play all season long for. Who cares if the guy missed a couple of weeks because he was tired or didn't feel well. Noone would let there son go to school if first off he was sick or injured and secondly he's worth a hundred million bucks. Ask any manager in Baseball and I will assure you that they had much rather have AP than "who" Isn't that what the MVP award is?!?

Albert P....should have won it easily....Howard is over-rated by far....Where did Howard's team make it....sure not play offs. Albert has the consistency that should have won it, plus his defense is far superior over Howards.
