time taken for the light to reach from the sun to earth
=distance from the sun to earth/speed
=93,000,000miles/186,000miles/second
=500 secs
=500/60
=8 1/3 secs.
2.time takenfor the light to reach fromthe moon to earth
=distance ofthe moon fromearth/speed of light
=240,000 miles/186,000 miles/sec
=1 9/31 sec
3.400 square feet will be covered by 1 gallon of paint
4000 sft will be covered by (direct variation)=4000/400
=10 gallons
cost of painting=no of gallons times the rate per gallon
=10gallons*$8.95/gallon
=$89.50

First off, i don't see what's so wierd about these questions. Very straight forward questions.
1. 93,000,000 / 186,000=500
500 / 60 =8.33 minutes
2. 240,000 / 186,000=1.29 seconds.
3. 1 gallon of paint covers 400, therefore to cover 4,000 sq feet, you would need 10 gallons of paint, because 10 x 400= 4000.
so, 1 gallon costs $8.95, 8.95 x 10 =$89.5

1) If the sun is 93,000,000 miles away from the Earth, and light travels at 186,000 miles per second:
186,000 miles / 1 second = 93,000,000 miles / x seconds
Cross-multiplying we get:
186,000x = 93,000,000 --- Divide both sides by 186,000
x = 500 seconds --- Divide this by 60 to get minutes...
x = 8 & 1/3 minutes = 8 minutes and 20 seconds
2) If the moon is 240,000 miles from Earth, and light travels at 186,000 miles per second:
186,000 miles / 1 second = 240,000 miles / x seconds
Cross-multiplying we get:
186,000x = 240,000 --- Divide both sides by 240,000
x â 1.29 seconds
3) One gallon will cover 400 feet². A man needs to cover 4,000 feet². One gallon of paint costs $8.95:
400 feet² / 1 gallon = 4000 feet² / x gallons
Cross-multiplying we get:
400x = 4000 --- Divide both sides by 400
x = 10 gallons
$8.95 / 1 gallon = x / 10 gallons
Cross-multiplying we get:
x = $89.50
** Note: #1 and #2 are assuming that when you typed "186,000 miles per second" that you meant to type "186,000 miles per second". Since the speed of light is approximately 186,282.397 miles per second, I assumed that you just accidently left off a zero. Cheers!

The answers are :
1.Light travels at 186,000 / sec
therefore divide 93,000,000 by 186,000
to get the number of seconds it takes for sunloight to reach the earth
93,000,000 / 186,000 =
500 seconds
8.3 minutes
2. divide 240,000 by 186,000
240,000 / 186,000 = 1.2803225 ( rounded to the nearset 100th ) = 1.29 seconds
3. Divide
4,000 by 400
4,000 / 400 = 10
It would iake appox. 10 gallons of paint to cover 4,000 sq. ft.
iherefore
rhe toral cost of paint will be
$8.95 x 10 = $89.96

S = D/T
T = D/S
93000000/186000 = 500 seconds
-----------------
240000/186000 = (40/31) seconds or about 1.29 seconds
--------------------------------
(4000/400) * 8.95 = 10 * 8.95 = $89.50

The first two are questions that I put on a test for my remedial algebra students at a state college. They're really not so weird.
The third is a very practical application.
