Why should anyone have a cell phone? 20 years ago it was a plaything for the rich, and now it's a plaything for everyone. I was recently in a funeral and as the priest asked us all to bow our heads in reverence, and a *&%$#@!! phone went off in the absolute silence of a service.

The person that had it seemed to blush as everything STOPPED and we all stared at her. As she left she walked past me and I overhead her saying "Gee, I thought it was on vibrate."

We lived for MANY years without phones on the simple basis of trust and punishment. If you say you're gonna be somewhere and aren't you're punished. If you need to be contacted you can call your parents. You're 14; life doesn't revolve around you.

I have a cell phone as a 39 year old man. I have an on-call job and e-mail, a computer and a family aging slowly into the future which will one day end. I keep in touch. I make the effort, and I know how to have respect for someone. I leave my phone in my truck when working or at church. If not it's on vibrate.

People have cell phones for THEIR own convenience. "I'm outta shampoo; I need beef steaks and meat sauce; where's the extra toilet paper; what does your cousin call his cat?"

I truly doubt anyone needs one but they have them so NO I don't think a 14 year old child needs a phone. If you're seeking arguments with your parents about having one then show them my personal opinion and see if they can't make a compromise with you. After that let them read the articles I have attached and see what they decide.

If you were gonna ask for a phone, I would suggest the phone that has a basic set of functions; you don't need cameras, Mp3's, text or any of the other gadgets just to keep yourself entertained. People used to read or just look at the things around you. Try that... ;-)

Good luck & God Bless You!

I didn't have a cell phone when I was in school. If I needed a ride, I would call someone from the office. Now, if you start working at nights or weekends, I would probably say that this is a good reason for safety. But, latest evidence is showing that cell phones may be harmful, especially if used a lot and by younger persons.

1. Meteor strikes and near misses. Having a cell phone and text messaging might give a kid enough heads up time to put on a fireproof suit and/or oxygen mask.
2. They are useful whenever one is kidnapped. Kidnappers never check for cell phones. They just use duct tape on your mouth and wrists and that way they know you couldn't use your phone anyway because you can't reach it. But, it would you would promise to always wear that little thing that goes in your ear and that you'll teach your parents what the series of grunts and duct-tape moans mean for communication in kidnapping emergencies. Kidnappers never ever check for ear phones.
3. Aliens are a growing concern. Seriously. The two red ones that were tracked by NORAD down in central America were seen in a village and they ran away from these two women who had cell phones. That's the truth.
4. Fourteen-sixteen year olds who use cell phones experience a significantly lower teen pregancy rate, as well as lower sexually transmitted disease incidence. It has something to do with lowering the sexual mystique by actually getting a lot of it our of your system through engaging in copious conversations with the opposite sex on the phone versus having to involuntarily having copious amounts of other kinds of behaviors with them.
5. Tsunamis. With a cell phone, if a tsunami is coming, you would be able to receive the big cell phone alert from tsunmai headquarters in Colorado and could climb to saftey in time.
6. Learning how to drive is ONE task to learn. A scary one. Learning how to use a cell phone is ANOTHER challenging learning task. Learning how to use a cell phone WHILE learning how to drive at is actually quite imprudent and irresponsible. Suggest the sensible way to go about it, which is getting a cell phone at fourteen, talking on it a lot while being driven around and then when you're learning how to drive, the two tasks at the same time don't confound you and cause you to be in an accident and wind up paralyzed.

I'm a parent and my 14-year-old daughter has a cell phone. I like the cell phone because it is much easier for me to keep track of her and communicate with her. On the other hand, it's a big responsibility. Kids start to live on their phones and get too many contacts and it gets out of hand. Harrassment, etc. If a teen gets a phone, he or she really needs to know the responsibilities involved with having one.

The only reason a 14 year old should have a cellphone is to call home or someone in an emergency.

To use in case of emergencies. If a 14 year old has one then the parents should get one of those Firefly's that have a GPS in them so that they can find them if need be.

There are far fewer pay phones around than there used to be so if your 14 year old goes places without you then they could find themselves with no way to contact you.

prepaid is fine, but not a service plan with a contract where someone can talk at the wrong time of day, and end up with a cell bill worse than a car payment
