That means "Quit once you've won!"
In other words "Stop while you're still a winner and remain unbeaten!"

quitters never win because they quit before they win, winners never quit because they are consistent in whatever they do like training. quit while you're ahead was made by a parent warning their child they better quit while ahead or they will get beat.

The guy who realizes that there are some things better left unfinished. Say you go to a casino and actually win some money. Would you take what you won and leave, or would you bet everything and just lose it?--quit while you're ahead.
Say that you want to go and play russian roulette.--quit while you're ahead.
Do I need to go on?

There is a certain point beyond which it is pointless to keep trying. you undo what you might have achieved. Like lots of popular shows on tv that after a certain point just grow tired. It is better to go out when people like you than to fade out when you plod into the realm of no longer relevant.

Maybe "quit while your ahead" is just advice for those who never quit. We can continue with things sometimes that are not really safe or smart for us to do and because we are stubborn we continue with it fall on our face and loose. If you quit you have won because you won't loose anymore.

that can be applied to different things like gambling, warfare, arguing a point, you yourself might be thinking there is more room to go but in reality you have reached the limit or surpassing it and you need someone to bring it to your attention to stop and reassess and or regroup to move foward

sounds just like the saying.... practice makes perfect but yet being told nobody is perfect.
to me..."guitters never win", "winners never quit","practice make perfect", "nobody is perfect" are said to motivate people.

" Quit while your ahead " comes straight out of gambling semiotics. It is quite valid in that context.
