I just realized that new styles are very 60s based and alot of movies are coming out that are based on the 60s. Also on red carpets I am seeing many stars giving the actual peace sign from the sixties (Not the "Deuce"). I see alot of women wearing the head bands also and Mary Tyler Moore type style. Is this the spark of a new 60s that we have all been seeking?

Nope. This sort of thing happens all the time: a fashion or fad goes out of style, only to reappear thirty or forty years later. If you look closely, there'll be subtle differences, though. Last season, there were a lot of mini and microskirts in evidence. This season, I've seen a lot of pedal-pushers - but they're not called that; now they're "capri pants". Knee-high boots, flip-flops - all that was associated with the sixties. Look again in six months and all this "retro" stuff will have gone out and been supplanted with something else - maybe hairstyles from the 1940s, maybe wingtips and zoot suits - fashion is both silly and fascinating...but that's all it is - fashion. And as important in the overall scheme of things as is the length of the dark band on this autumn's crop of wooly bears.

I think it's driven by politics. People are dissatisfied with our policies and are ready to be inspired by their leaders. We are under direct terrorist threat and the debate over women working in or out of the home has resurfaced. Sounds a whole lot like the sixties to me-and I think that people gravitate toward the fashions of the generation that has lived this before. I think we want to be reminded that this part is hard and resolving our issues is going to be harder but we will pull ourselves out of it, and we'll do it more quickly if we take a look at how it's been done before.

I, for one, refuse to go back to the 60s unless I can take panty hose, Prozac, and my beautiful PT Cruiser with me.
