You don't say for how long or how far but you should definitely pack some emergency items if you are going into the mountains or for a day long ride.

A hoof pick
An easy boot (if your horse has shoes)
A first aid kit (for horses AND humans)
Cell phone
Water
Food
Some rope (in case you have a tack emergency)

Have fun!

That would depend on how long your going out...

If its just a guided trail ride for an hour or so you really don't need anything special. Just wear long pants (ie. jeans), and some kind of boot with a small heel.

If you are going on a long trip like a camping trip in the mountains, don't go by yourself, because I'm assuming you have very little experience in this area. In that case call your travel agency or your trail guide and ask for advice on what to take.

Okay, you'll need the essentials-
Some food (trail mix is best, it's filling and light to carry)
Lots of water-amazing how fast you run out
Cell phone, definetly, if you go alone, or even with a group
Matches, if its an overnight thing, or a late night thing.
First Aid kit, incase any unintentioned mishaps occur.
Rope, because rope is always useful and forever handy
If you're traveling far, bring a nose feed bag and some hay/barley
a hoofpick incase your horse picks up a stone
A saddle cover, rain coat, and quarter sheet, in case it rains-if it's a cloudy day
a halter and tie rope, if you stop, so your horse can have a breather from his bit.
a fly mask for your horse, if the bugs come out
some tall boots, so mud/dirt/rocks dont get to rubbing your feet raw
LONG PANTS-you will regret it if you wear shorts.
headgear, probably a helmet, if you go on rough terrain
some splint/SD boots for your horse, to protect his legs.
CAnt think of aything else, but I hope you have a fun, relaxing ride!!

A hoof pick, A first aid kit , Cell phone, Water,Food, Some rope ,
Toilet paper or wipes (you never know), and
Depending where you are going and have never been before, take along a disposable camera,
Also depending on who you are going with, that 12pk sounds good if you like a drink now and then.

well, no matter how long you'll be gone, you NEED to take a cell phone in case of an emergency. don't forget to TELL SOMEONE you'll be gone. take a bottle of water. i can't really think of anything else so have fun!

get a saddle bag, you put a12 pack in one side and a 12 pack in the other, you ride out til you are done with one side then it's time to turn around and ride home...this is the way i used to do it....
