I work at Claires and pierce ears. For the ear to heal after an ear piercing it takes 6-8 weeks. However, if you pierced it on your own with out using a piercing stud the hole is actually smaller than those made with a stud. Hoops should not be placed in the ear lobe for 6 months after an ear piercing. Make sure that you are cleaning your ear with ear care antiseptic, you can buy this at Claires, but Walmart also sells it. Do not use alcohol or peroxiode to clean your ear, these cause infection and actually "eat" the earring. Also, if your ear becomes red, hot or puss starts coming out you will need to see a doctor as this is a sign of infection. If the piercing is in the skin, it should only take about 6 weeks to heal completely... but you have to keep taking good care of it. If you keep up the thorough care, however, you should be able to change the ring in about 4 weeks... just don't leave the hole empty for a long period of time, because it won't be fully healed yet.

I think the regular time is like 4-6 weeks before it is safe to change an earring.
