If you contact the seller prior to the close of the auction and give valid reasons for wanting to retract your bid then they might accept.
The next highest bidder will then be offered a second chance offer by the seller.
The sooner you contact the seller though the better... Most of sellers are understanding and will not leave negative feedback not wanting to get into a war over feedback thing..

WHen you bid on an item on Ebay, you are enterign into a legally binding contract and are expected to hold up your end. Failing to pay for an item after the auction is closed is a breach of that contract. The seller can leave negative feedback on you which will affect your buyer reputation on Ebay. The seller can also file a complaint with Ebay who will take appropriate action as warranted. Many people do not take ebay bids seriously and they should. If a seller is ticked off enough, he could even initiate legal action.

If you want to withdraw a bid before the auction is closed then the repricussions are not as severe.

In any event, it is up to the seller whether to let you off the hook and offer a second chance offer to the next highest bidder.

I don't think the item will automatically be sold the bidder below you. The seller has the option the give a 'second chance offer' to other bidders. He may try to claim back his fee for your winning bid by opening a dispute which may result in a strike unless you had a good reason to withdraw your bid.

If the bid is not over:
The second highest bidder automatically becomes the higher bidder.

If the bid is over:
The seller may or may not offer the product for the second highest bidder.

Regardless of the situation sellers don't usually like bid retractions and that may affect your feedback if the bid was over before you retracted your bid.

The second highest bidder automatically becomes the highest.
I know it happened to me.
