I take care of the elderly, on my own, and sometimes they don't want to pay the full amount or pay at all, and then start complaining. I've had this happen many a time to me, and I am honest and my reputation means everything to me. How can I stop from getting ripped off from them? Draw up a contract they sign for services, and then take them to court if they don't pay? Your suggestions, please.

Is there any way I can tell by a person that will cheat me or doesn't want to pay before I start services for them?

why not have them pay up front for a certain amount of time...per week or per month. Make them pay at the beginning. Have you ever thought of working for an agency so you don't have to worry about it at all?

This is always going to be a problem getting money out of people is hard so my best suggestion would be have a short contract which says that you will perform such and such work for them and agree to paying half at the start and the balance on completion of the job get them to sign it and dont start until half is paid .Make it just a simple contract that an 8 year old could read because you will never take them to court it is not worth the trouble but they think they have made a commitment and wont want to be taken to court either so you should be on a winner .Goodluck.

I work for a staffing agency and have also done home health, and the companies always get a contract. If anything happens to the person, you can collect from their estate, but you have to have something in writing.

I think that the best way to go about it is to have them pay you for the week in advance. When they pay you, you then sign something saying that they paid for the week and you will perform your job duties. Just explain to them that you've had people who didn't pay so you have to ask them for the pay upfront.
