is it dangerous to put in a plastic plug into the outlet (you know, the kind people use to baby-proof their houses, etc.) to prevent anyone from using it? i ask because i don't know how whether i will ever get it fixed because i have so many outlets at my disposal and i don't really know how. i just wonder if it is okay to put in one of those plastic things. again, as before, if you have an expertise in the area, that is most appreciated! thank you.

If the recept doesn't show severe charring, blackening around the prong holes, then it's probably not damaged enough to be a hazard. It should be safe to install the plastic childproofing caps. Just don't forget and pull them out in the future and try to use the recept.

I would say replace it. If it is damaged it could be a fire hazard. It is easy to replace. all you need is to go to Home depot or even Wal mart and get a new one. turn off the circuit breaker to that room. then remove the wall plate , then the two screws holding the outlet in and detach the wires and reattach the the wire to the same screws on the new one, draw a picture before removing the old one if that would help.
