My sister and I were discussing this last night. She said a good way is to put a tape recorder in a room. Press record and leave it alone for several hours. Then replay it, listening to the static. That is the only way you would hear them.
Beyond that, it depends on how intuned you are to the paranormal. I am very intuned and I get chills down my spine in the presence of anything paranormal. I have only once experienced smell involved.

anything not normal is paranormal or abnormal.when it comes ot inanimate objects,then it is paranormal,but with living things,you have to be extremely careful before you draw any conclusion.
these paranormal activities go on all the time unnoticed.only you will have to be the judge.most at times we turn to ignore them or blame our imagination.
before you start.convince yourself of its existence!rule imagination out,them pay close attention to your surrounding.i prefer writing them down.some will happen more than once then highlight them.do not tell no one until you have confirm it a number of times.
mind you,paranormal activities are above the perception of the human senses.basically,you are trying to open your inner senses by following these guidelines.use no magic or external aides for this!with time and patience,you will clearly see normal from paranormal!

If you are walking and you suddenly get the chills, or walk threw a cool area. Also if a radio suddenly gets staticy they say a ghost may have went by.

Make a Ghost theater or buy one. If you build it they will come.Put thermometers in the seats.They don't like it when you tell them to put their feet down though.

Suppesedly, normal cameras have been able to detect "auras" of ghosts...
