I have to write a paper in English class about The characters in the Movie the night of the Iguana and the characters in the movie A Streetcar Named Desire, both by tennessee williams. I have to explain how each character shows a sign of desperation, and explain about deperation. what it is and whatever else anyone might be able to think of that could help me out. this is a research paper but i dont find anything on desperation... i need help!!!

In StreetCar, Blanche was a desperate character if you know her background: She sold off the family home, was turning tricks in a local motel and was caught seducing one of her students. Broke, she went to live with her sister Stella and her husband Stanley - who eventually rapes her.
In an effort to block out the difficulties of her life, she retreats into a fantasy world where she is still the Belle of the Ball and men are still wooing her and coming to take her on an ocean voyage.
When her final gentleman caller turns out to be the doctor who is taking her to the sanitarium, her final fantasy is to convince herself this is her long awaited escort and gladly goes with him.

I believe this substitution of fantasy for reality is called transference, but I'm not positive.
