I need some help from you guys! I'm teaching Language Arts to juniors (16 years old) in high school, and I wanted to show them a movie that had a link with literature, poetry in particular. My first choice was Dead Poets' Society, but I've learned the senior year teacher uses it, and I don't want to step on any toes. So, anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

A friend of mine who teaches 8th and 11th grade English in Pennsylvania has shown her students DPS, numerous Shakespeare films, and while teaching a poetry unit, she had her class watch Dangerous Minds. As far as guidelines for what to show in class, movies do not have to be rated G only. As long as you run the title by the principal or head of your department (if you have one) and explain why you are showing it, you should not have a problem. You probably already know that.

A couple of years ago when I was an undergrad student doing my student teaching, the teacher I worked with also had her junior class watch Dead Poets and Dangerous Minds. They loved both of them and both movies jump started their appreciation of poetry.

Good Luck! I hope you come up with something you and your students will enjoy watching.

I found a website that has a partial list of poetry featured in movies and movies about poetry.

Finding Forrester has a link to writing, Junior year is usually American Literature so a movie that links to any of the American Lit canon, such as The Crucible, The Last of the Mohicans, The Great Gatsby or any other classic piece of lit. Finding Neverland is good.

Richard III with Ian McKellan. the story is spoken in Shakespearean English even although that's as much as date to a 1930's time-physique. Prescreen the action picture, even although, because of the fact that i think of there's a quick scene of nudity, which does no longer strengthen the plot.

You can only show movies that are 'G' general Viewing.
There are rules as to what you can show..
Do a websearch for 'General Movies' and respect the rights of the students to not be pushed into viewing things you are interested in.
Remember your age group....

Have them read poetry into Odeo and record their own videos..this is a great option
