It will be tough to find a new Sony for <$1000. You would be better off going for a Dell or iBM/Lenovo. In my experiences these laptops hold up far better than others. Dell, although their support isn't the greatest, is still far better than most other manufacturers. It's also easier to find replacement parts for them.
You should be able to get a decently equipped Dell Latitude E1505 or a Lenovo Thinkpad R60 for under $1000. For even better deals, you can get them off of eBay. Just make sure you're buying from a well established seller.
Keep in mind that the laptops you'll be able to find in your price range will be great for general use, for any intensive gaming or applications you'll be much better off shelling out the extra money for a better equipped machine.

Good luck on finding a new Sony at that price. They aren't that great, anyway. Toshiba has a few good ones under a grand. Dell is probably your best bet, as they have low priced base models and they have lots of extras you can pick and choose from, as you need them. Also, if you a student, be sure to check for any student discounts, most offer them. The new MacBooks start at $1099 and if you want to go a little over, get that. Nothing tops a Mac.

Check out Dell, Lenovo, Sony, etc. Shop around for the best deal. These companies have specials running most of the time, so look out for those.

The have dozens of great laptops for well under that price. (Even some decent ones at $600)
Never, ever, ever, ever, EVER buy directly from Dell or Sony or Gateway unless you really like burning your money.
