Well, political parties started out as Federalists (those who supported a strong central government) and Anti-Federalists (those who wanted more states rights, and less federal control).
This goes all the way back to the days of the Articles of Confederation, when the central federal government was too weak to regulate trade, commerce, settle disputes, or deal with Shay's rebellion.
Of course, the Republican party of the 19th century started out as left wing liberals & the Democrats started out as right wing conservatives. Somehow, this did a 180 around the time of Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, & FDR's administration...when Democrats lost the south and gained the north, and became the part of liberals, while Republicans lost the north and gained the south & became conservatives.

All in all, people need a sense of belonging and a way to express their political beliefs...which is why they join political parties.

Political parties make elections interestings because of the insults being exchanged between them. The people do not have other ways to know the bad aspects of the candidates if there are no political parties.
