How old is the gas in it? if over 6 months, replace :(

Is it carbed or injected? Is it backfiring through the exhaust or through the intake? What have you done to it? I mean, did you try to make any adjustments, have an accident, get gas from an unfamiliar source, wash it with a high pressure hose? There can be a lot of reasons, but first you need to answer some of those questions.

If you have the tools and ability do a compression test. I worked on a 90 FXR with similar symptoms and it ended up being a stuck valve. I did the heads and it ran killer.

First thing you should check is if the carb is flooded. If you smell gas let it set for about 15 minutes and try again. If it still won't start,Pull your spark plugs and check them to see if they are fouled. If that is not the problem then you should check the coil next.

You might have fouled spark plugs. Take them out and check them. If they look good. Still replace them with new ones. Also you could have a bad coil.

My first guess is the ignition timing either slipped, or has been readjusted incorrectly.
Second I would say incorrect pushrod (length) adjustment, holding and intake valve partially open.
