Why isn't the volume on my computer working?

Even though the sound is on, for some strange reason nothing is playing sound. I have a laptop and recently its fan has been coming off because of high usage. Could this be the reason that there is no volume? If so please explain and if not please tell me why it is not working? I have a laptop so i do not have any speakers attached. They are in the computer itself. Even when i put in my earphones there is still no sound.

I know this is going to sound stupid but check to make sure your computer hasn't been muted
