It occurs to me that Indian culture has been male chauvinistic for several hundred years. Males seem to think of them as superior to Females or is this just in generations long past? How can we overcome this?

Male Chauvinistic

Indian society is not highly male chauvinistic and is just the opposite compared to many other societies in this world, based on the following facts:

(1) Indian subcontinent comprises of four countries - India, Pakisthan, Bangladesh and Srilanka. These countries share same culture and history. ALL OF THESE countries have democratically elected women as the top leader of the country with real power. In many countries in the western world (incl USA) and in Arabic world it is unthinkable to have women in top power.

India has a vibrant functioning democracy. Indira Gandhi, (a female and an “in-auspicious” widow) was democratically elected as the top leader of country. She mis-used that power and declared emergency in the country for her selfish reasons - the result was that she failed miserably in the next elections. Her successors were even worse and couldn’t complete their term – She got re-elected and again ruled India. This proves that her election was not done by default or by an un-intelligent mass of voters.

(2) Indian laws regarding equal rights, sexual abuse, abortions, dowry and other social problems are all highly acclaimed by the world law community. They are the best laws. This means the will of the society and the laws it make are not chauvinistic!

But tt is very very tough to enforce laws when a country is very poor and has to support a large number of people. India supports one fifth of the entire human race and is only as-big-as the state of Texas. India has been supporting masses in this scale for the last 10,000 yrs or so. USA support about 4% of human race and has done this only for about last 500 yrs.

If you put 10 very law abiding and very clean guys to live in a small room and when there is not enough resources like furniture, light etc for all of them, you know what will happen in a while.

So if it occurs to you that Indian culture has been male chauvinistic for several hundred years - thats a wrong impression. There is nothing wrong with the past or the basic culture of the society.

Hey I disagree with your statement. You cannot generalise the entire male population for the actions of a few. Most educated male of any nationality, will treat women as equal. I don't think gender decides who is superior. Its the brains, confidence, dedication and hard-work that determine how good the person is. I don't think the concept of 'glass-ceiling' exists anymore. Whether its the Corporate Ladder or at home, if you are genuinely good, you will always be respected. Only incompetent people come up with excuses for mediocrity.
Yes I do agree, that there are certain men who are chauvinists. The truth is that its not that they think they are superior to women. They act in this manner only because they know they themselves are unsure of their own capabilities.
A truly confident man will never disrespect a woman.

Hindu couples should not care about the sex of their child. The reason that some couples want male children is that it is the male who stays with the parents. When a woman is married, she goes to her husband's house and lives with his family. A woman living in someone else's house cannot offer support (mostly monetary, some emotional as well), a male can. Having said that, most Hindus that live in cities do not follow this because everyone lives in their own houses. Money is exchanged in families on a need-to-have basis, if a brother or aunt needs money then all they need to do is ask. Texts of Sanatana Dharma place women in the highest regards. Historically, there have been women who debated knowledgeable male contemporaries and won. You won't find this in Christianity, Islam, or Judaism. Only in a Hindu household will you see a daughter treated like a goddess, respected by all and seen as the source of material wealth (eg. Parvati) and spiritual well being. The aspects of God dedicated to both wealth and knowledge are both female, additionaly there is one that is completely dedicated to feminine strength. The Earth is seen as a mother, cows too are seen as being motherly.

In the ancient Vedic culture and philosophy, women enjoyed an enviable social status and position. There are ample examples of women luminiaries in all walks of life. It is only after the Mahabharat war, the down trend started and has given us the stigma of male chauvinism and the sex- bias, heavily loaded against women and the girl child.
Efforts are already afoot to correct the prevalent mind-set. There have been various effort in this regard. Emphasis on female literacy has to be vigoureously pursued. Of course it takes time to change the social mind-set. You and I, we all have to come forward and lead the crusade. Let us set an example.

Male dominance is deeply rooted in Indian culture.Males are supposed to be the bread earner, fighter and protector of the family. He is physically stronger. But this applies to a large extent everywhere in the world.Only in terms of the techniques it may seem to be different in different places. In India, however, women have enjoyed the power, prestige, and in several families dominance to the extent that she has virtually ruled the roost. There are occasions when we pay due respect to the female sex. In Navratra we feed and accord welcome to the teen-aged females. Then there is the festival, rakshabandhan and bhaidooz when sisters are given due regard. In spite of all that a woman remains protected by her father, brother, and later by husband, and much later by son all her life. She remains at the center-stage of family life.It is the male chauvinism that has to be mellowed if not totally abrogated.

Yes, it is. But a survey conducted recently concluded that Indian men make the best husbands in the world & 80% of Indian women interviewed agreed with this.
Something to think about ?

Yes.
But most unfortunately the male chauvinism is supported by more women than men. God has created women with more care not to bare their body but to bare their captive strength.
