What are some good subjects for writing poetry?

I think it's best to go into the very details that make your life different than others.

What you need to do is pay attention. Not just being awake but paying attention to conversations around you, a phrase, a picture, nature, sounds, sensations, feelings, emotions, news stories, people (definitely people) and animals.

Something will strike you or stay with you. Sometimes a quote will work. When I first started writing poetry, I used to look at pictures on calendars and try to make a poem. Some people put words on little cards and randomly choose them and try to make a poem.

As in all writing, the best thing to do is read. There are lots of beginners books on poetry ( I still use them 40 years later), and they are the best [not the literary/criticism type books, but books for schools K 1-12.] Check sites on-line for teachers--they have good starters.

Have fun mostly, and share your writing. If you go online with your poetry avoid the sites that are mean and criticize. My fave is "Poetry Forum" by About. They are good people and give good feedback.

Love, definitely. Any kind of love is so inspiring. Love that you have for your boyfriend, love that you have for your dog, love for your friends, even the pain coming from love is so strong that it can be put in powerful words and is very effective to the reader. I am not a poet, but i love reading GOOD love poems (not the sappy ones), and i write about love. Hope that helped. The ocean is good too.

Pain, longing, desire, joy-anything with strong feelings attatched to it. And be honest about the feeling. Poetry is about the true, boiled down essence of a thing.
