It's safe. I don't think anyone has had an allergic reaction to it or anything. However, it often comes with a lot of negative side effects--everything from weight gain to breakthrough bleeding. Also, once it's in you, there is no "antidote" so if you experience these negative side effects, you just have to wait it out.
I had a bad experience with the Depo shot. I would start bleeding every day about 8 weeks into the shot, and the doctor recommended that I have the shot closer together so I wouldn't bleed. However, with my last injection, I bled every day for 6 months. I started bleeding in mid October of 2005 and stopped bleeding in early March of 2006. NOT FUN. (I never gained weight with it. In fact, I lost 100 lbs during the time I was on it. So weight gain isn't necessarily going to happen to everyone on the shot)
But this experience isn't typical.

Rarely! So far, single girls and moms who I know and use it haven't gotten pregnant, their only complain is that they get a lot of mood swings and feel edgy most of the time. They all say that it's part of the side effects, some have had a change in weight also due to the shot....

I was on the shot for several years with no side effects but my doctor made me get off of it because she heard that it can cause early osteoporosis. She put me on the NuvaRing and I love it! My periods are short and light.

Very safe, but some people can suffer from side effects from the injection.

It is safe.I have been on it in the past. I gained weight from being on it. And I stayed kind of unhappy,"down", but that could have been from the heavy flowing I had while I was on it.

pretty safe but u may become suicidal with the extra weight u WILL put on.
