I have an old Compaq Presario desktop pc that has a small hard drive of only 9GB...(it's sad, really). I just came across an old spare hard drive that holds an additional 6GB.
Is there any way I can install this extra HD on to my Presario that I'm currently using to gain more storage capacity???
If so, how??? Your help is appreciated.

Pretty easy make sure that the one that is already in there is the master , check the jumper on the back, next make sure that it is at the end of the cable.Take the other one that you want to install and make sure the to set the jumper on the back to slave. Now connect that to the middle connecter on the ribbon and plug it in one of the extra lines comming off of the power supply. Turn the computer on and it should install it. Because the Operating System is on the other drive you may or may not have to format it.

P.S. MAKE SURE IT IS PLUGGED INTO THE WALL!!! The reason for this is so the system is grounded thru the electrical wires of the wall. You unplug it and the static electricty has knowhere to go but into your system and frie it. Radio Shack sells what they call anti-static wrist bands for about 5-10 bucks. One end goes around your wrist and the other end has alligator clips that you can connect to the frame, otherwise you have to hold on to the frame while you are working on it to KEEP GROUNDED!!! Dont worry about getting a shock!! keep it turned off. Even if it was on the board only has about 2.5 volts going thru it.... The power supply turns the 120 AC (alternating current doesnt matter which way you plug it into the wall) to 2.5 volts DC (direct current one side is positive the other side is negative) The most volts that the power supply uses is 12 volts DC and that is only when you turn it on. It zaps the board with 12 volts to wake it up and start the post boot test then it goes down to 2.5 volts. Once again people PLEASE if you donot know what you are talking about because you are a basement computer geek dont answer the question because YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE!!! I am Comptia A+ Cerified in computer troubleshoooting, repair and building. Also I am certified in computer networking. I spent the time and money going to school to become certified!! I do not mean to sound mean but I have read several answers not just on this question but on others that if the person did what was said they would have messed up their computer!!!!!

SORRY CIRRIC didnt mean to sound mean basicly you hit it on the head and had everthing right !!! until you told him to unplug it!!
ZEUS

Usually the slave is the next one over. The master is on the far side either left or right then the slave would be next to it. I have a old seagate tho that the slave is to take the jumpers off completey. Let me know who makes it and I'll see what I can find out for sure. Also 98 ran under the DOS (disk operating system) Win 2000 and XP run under NTFS (new technolgy file system which doesnt use DOS it is MSs way of getting rid of DOS. It might run tho because the OS is on the other drive. The worst that can happen is it wont work or you will have to format it!!!
tried to e-mail this to you but got back a message they cant verify your e-mail, maybe it wont go thru my proxy I'll shut it off and try again

Hi. There are jumpers on the back of hard drives to set them up as 'Master' , 'Slave' , or 'Cable Select'. The one now in your PC is almost certainly set to MS (master). Move the jumper on the other drive to SL, install it into an empty bay, connect the ribbon cable and power plugs (all with the PC unplugged from the wall and after touching the metal to eliminate static). Restart and you should be good to go.
