All big cities have robbers. It is not only in the Philippines. When going out, be sure that you dont wear all your expensive jewelries. Simplicity is the name of the game. I had cousins who wear too much jewelry so they were robbed in the university belt here in the Philippines. I used to wear earrings, necklace, ring , bracelet & watch. Just the simple ones. However, I had heard of these people robbed in the university belt. I just wore my watch. Dont wear Rolex when walking downtown. The person who robbed my cousin was a descent looking man!
Cellphones are frequently being taken in the buses or in the jeepneys. I had been a victim myself despite being careful.
Be careful also about the streetchildren. I had seen 3 incidences of these chilren climbing tall fences here in our vicinity really fast. However, when you report this to the barangay , they seem so unaffected by this. There are children who sniffs rugby seen by the barangay, traffic aids & patrol man. However, they knew it buy they dont care about this. Children are robbing even guarded subdivisions. Be careful!
Be careful also of your cars. My cousin parked her car while going to mass. Her front window was broken. My sister's car was also being attempted to open. However, her alarm is so sensitive.

I live in the Philippines and I've never been robbed! Lucky me. I think its just the bad press. You know, since I like watching Worlds Amazing Videos, I start to think that the US is full of these criminals who like robbing 7-11s.
But the scams to be wary of: never use your cellphone while your walking in the streets in Manila university belt area. Don't go into any dark alleys or any depressed areas wearing a lot of jewelry and looking cocky. Don't trust people who are too friendly.

Like any place in the world, you will likely get robbed if you do not use your common sense. Know which places in the city you should avoid. Do not flash your money visibly or bring along expensive jewelries that could surely attract trouble. Besides do you need that much jewelry when you go to the beaches or do some trekking? Bring only what is essential (simple watch) and leave all your expensive jewelries at home unless you plan to use these jewelries in formal occasions. Some travelers cheque are advised since it can be easily replaced when lost. Check my website for more info about Travel Concerns.

Absolutely not! Where would you even get that idea? The Philippines is a very safe country compared to Western Europe or especially the USA.
Of course you should avoid certain parts of big cities, and shouldn't necessarily travel to the ARMM region just for fun, but I also don't go to Alphabet City when I'm in NYC.
The Philippinos are very nice, friendly people.

I'd say yes.
but you know, all countires have incidents of robberies.
it's just that Philippines' robbery rate could be a little higher (hey, this is a third world country.)
but i think it's not very likely for a foreigner to get robbed, just don't go out at night to late.
but if you do get robbed, the Filipino 'population' will surely get a hold of the robber and beat it down on its knees before any police responds to the report, if anyone tries to report and the cops aren't too lazy to lift up their heavy a$$e$ that is.

As has been stated, no more than anywhere else in the world. In fact, I have lived in the Philippines 3+ out of the past 4 years, in the Visayas. In fact, I have felt safer in the Philippines than I have in my own country (USA).

Avoid travelling in a Jeepney alone. I know someone who was robbed.
Avoid Trike drivers in Angeles city promising to take you to a new bar. Stay on the main drag avoid sidestreets.
Avoid people who claim to have met you somewhere else.

If you act a certain way, the chances of being mugged are increased. Do not draw attention to yourself by strutting around wearing flashy clothes and accessories. Do not be loud and by all means do not ever verbally and publicly disrespect any Filipino you meet.
