Somebody recently asked why South Africa doesn't have a name like Canada or England. And why is the name of our country actually just a direction. Well, for those with clear heads this morning, what's your take? And can you suggest some other name. Another fun question, guys! No need to argue. And if you feel as if RSA is still ok, then be creative and suggest anything else for the sake of answering a fun question for once.

Note to all: I'm not in favor of changing the name. Just thought it would be a fun question to ask. The person that gave the thumbs-down must be some kind of idiot to not notice this!

I don't think it should be changed. South Africa is fine just as it is.

What could it be? Mandelaville is out. Azania is a rubbish name.

How about Ubuntustan? We can have a military base at Morrisville and an airforce base at Garnett Hill.

Well, we have North and South Dakota, so I don't think having a direction in the name is so bad; besides, it's descriptive.

It should perhaps be given a traditional name out of respect for the people who have lived there for millennia. This could create problems though since Africa's current borders were imposed by colonial powers with no regard for indigenous realities. If I were in their position I'd want to get rid of my "slave name" as quickly as possible!

I've actually thought about it before, I do think that South Africa is a silly name for a country, we dont question it cos weve grown up with it. Remember when the proposed new flag was printed in the paper and everyone was horrified with it? Look at how proudly it is waved now, and how terrible the old one appears. I think in the same way if the country's name was changed, people would look back in years to come and laugh and say 'Gee, I cant belive we used to be called South Africa, hahaha'

There were talks about the name changing to 'Azania'. I would hate that! Wouldn't you?? I think South Africa should keep it's name. That's it's name you know? And besides, it gives us all a good laugh when some ignorant foreigner asks us where we are from and we answer, 'South Africa' to which they reply, 'Yeah, but what part?' LOL!

Great question ou maat, why not" The Republic of Orange" named after the orange river. Look we have other examples like,Zambia, DRC (congo) Zimbabwe named after the ruins that country will soon become ,except ours would sound more colourfull and peacefull.

The United States of America doesn't have a real name, either.
