Marijuana is not LEGAL in any state. What you are talking about is the de-criminalization of marijuana that some states are adopting. This means that it is LESS criminal in those areas and it can be anything from a minor infraction to a misdemeanor instead of a felony to posess it. There are some cities in Oregon and Seattle that also have de-criminalized marijuana laws.

It's legal in California if your doctor recommends it.

BUT! The Federal government (FBI/DEA) have stated that they will continue to enforce federal drug law. So many people in CA who thought they were following the law were raided by the Feds and jailed, etc.

Qwyxr is right...there are local and federal jurisdictions that have dissimilar laws. There are many other places where it has been "decriminalized," meaning there would be misdemeanor charges, similar to loitering.
