I have recently ended a 4 year relationship that just wasnt working. My boyfriend put me through hell with drinking problems for the first 2.5 years after which he started to get his act together and stopped partying so much and lost a lot of weight etc. But despite us both trying to make things work it just wasnt working, from my end anyway, I wasnt happy. So I ended it. But now he is completely shattered and broken hearted and is saying he has no purpose left anymore and that he will never stop hurting and that he is afraid of what he'll do when he goes back to living alone next week (he is currently staying at his parents). He is taking full responsibility for things not working (he was a bit of a selfish bastard and took most things for granted) despite my telling him that it is 50/50, but he wont stop beating himself up. I am afraid of him doing something stupid. What can I do to help him without hindering my ability to move on. I love him but I know I've done the right thing.

=what a strong lady you are. YOU HAVE DONE WHAT IS best FOR BOTH OF YOU AT THIS POINT> HATS OFF TO YOU AND HE WILL GET OVER IT AND MAYBE AT SOME OTHER POINT YOU CAN TRY IT AGAIN.

Sounds like he's trying to manipulate you into staying with him. Tell him you understand and it's you not him and he will find someone better that will treat him good (maybe if you take the blame he will feel better himself). I would tell his parents what he has told you about when he moves out and being afraid of what he could do. The it will be up to them to keep an eye on him. Move on and don't let him try to control you. You deserve someone that will give to your relationship 100%.

Be his friend... or if that doesnt work...
dont talk to him at all, maybe it is making it worse that he sees you and talks to you making it to where he cannot move on.
