Museum derivative of Greek word into Latin meaning "Temple or Shrine". The oldest are the Chinese Shrines, and the Egyptian, unless you want to count the preserved accounts of drawing written on cave walls by cave men and or natives.
All the other commercial museums are collections of the findings of other peoples civilizations, like the Louvre in Paris, most of the things at the British Museum as well. Pompeii is a perfect example where the people that died their are frozen and viewed by the public like the tombs of the mummies.
