I have a 1GHZ AMD Athlon, with a good heatsink and fan, but an average temp. of 45 degrees Celsius. I want a faster computer, and I know the CPU can be overclocked to 1.3 or 1.6 GHZ. Is this a good idea, based on your experiences?

origamimark is completely correct. The benefits are small and will cause your CPU to fail much sooner. I would look into other methods before risking burning your CPU. Like he said, more memory, faster hard drives, etc.

It is OK. The processor will eventually fail, and much sooner than if you had not done this.

I wonder how you think you will benefit from a faster CPU ? To make a computer work better, you might be better focused on adding a bit more RAM, as this will remove some disk I/O from the equation, and have a much greater impact on throughput than a faster processor.

Overclocking is for those people who have a passion of pushing things beyond the limit. If you are one of them, go ahead but don't forget that it voids the warranty.

It won't do anything bad. The most that would happen it it won't start up. Then simply reset the CMOS.
