Our Christmas tree is very important in my little family, so every year, no matter who comes to spend Christmas at our house, we put a beautiful ornament on the tree for them, with their name and the year on it. Everyone else gets a new ornament each year as well.
The next year, when we put up the tree, we see their ornaments, and all the others with years and names, and it always makes us smile when we remember who visited and the memories that we shared. Some of them are from many years ago, and were some that my children made in kindergarten. Some were only a few years ago, but were from a special Granny who died, and are a treasure.
My children are already older, and when my two granddaughters are older, they will have a treasure of ornaments that they can look at to remember all the Christmases since they were born.

if i ever squeeze any little rug rats out i guess i'll pass on the tradition of giving one gift to each person on christmas eve before we go to bed. usually it's a pair of pajamas or something like that. you don't want to give a really cool toy cause then the kids are up all night with the darn thing.

I was a Long-Term single parent, so what I would do (and both my children were disabled) was on Christmas Eve -- we would get to choose one small gift to open the night before .... and that one would be the one they would take into their rooms to play with and go to sleep with overnight (because, as we all know, children the world over shake, rip corners of the paper off, and try to tell you what they have for Christmas Presents.
AFTER viewing the Various Versions of Christmas Carol (Muppets Christmas Carol was a favorite -- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and others), the goal was to get them to go to bed EARLY -- because this SANTA had to finish wrapping the gifts overnight and put them under the tree.
They woke up the next morning to the smell of fresh-baked blueberry muffins (their favorite along with Apple-Cinnamon Muffins), and ... although excited, they waited for ME to set up the Camera/CamCorder for the Christmas Present opening Video - and I can tell you for sure ... those are some of the MOST HILARIOUS videos one would EVER view --- and to this day -- they have looked at them every so often ... now adults ... are embarassed, but do realize what fun that was.
And yes, the Night before Christmas Story -- that was a FAVORITE -- every Christmas it MUST be read before they go to sleep.
AFTER That -- it is MY Turn - to find all the shreds of wrapping paper, all the ripped pieces of cardboard, and everything else -- and wait for the next two weeks of trash pickup before all of it is gone!

Even though our family sees each other nearly every day, we always get together on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On Christmas Day, we go to my parents and open gifts. After we open gifts, my parents make a huge breakfast (pancakes, bacon, eggs, the works). That's our newest tradition. We used to have a big dinner too, but have gotten away from that. We usually have a big Christmas Eve dinner instead. It works great for us!

I started a new tradition a couple of years ago for my grandchildren. Instead of ornaments, I cover my tree with a bunch a little toys (purchased at the local $ stores)..after they open their gifts, they take turns picking gifts from the tree. They love coming over every weekend standing around the tree trying to decide what they will select when it's time.

Mother reading from The Holy Bible about the " reason for the Season. " the opening of the gifts and the meal and family conversations. the memories are precious as both parents are gone now as is my wife. but the memories are there and can never, ever be taken away.

Every year we have Christmas dinner at my granddaddy's house. That alone is a great tradition. But every year for as long as I can remember, my granddaddy plays the song "Porky Pig's Blue Christmas". It's so funny and it just wouldn't feel like Christmas to me if we didn't have Christmas dinner at his house and listen to that song, laughing our a**es off.

every christmas morning we'd eat bagles and hot chocolate before opening the presents, that's one thing. the other would probably be to decorate right after thanksgiving and just be happy and thankful for family.
