Webster defines education as the process of educating or teaching (now that's really useful, isn't it?) Educate is further defined as "to develop the knowledge, skill, or character of..." Thus, from these definitions, we might assume that the purpose of education is to develop the knowledge, skill, or character of students. Unfortunately, this definition offers little unless we further define words such as develop, knowledge, and character.

As mentioned in the other answers, education is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, practices, logic, etc. Education with a capital E is also the acquisition of norms, beliefs, and systems of function. We may break Education into three main, crucial and interwoven parts, family, community and schools. These parts, if effective, present the best process of educating children to co-exist in society and to bring something to it. If, however, one part is lacking or disturbing the system, the education of a child will ultimately be affected in a dramatic way. One may educate themselves to a large extent, but they inevitably acquire some resources from one or more of these three parts.

Both individuals and countries benefit from education. For individuals, the potential benefits lie in general quality of life and in the economic returns of sustained, satisfying employment. For countries, the potential benefits lie in economic growth and the development of shared values that underpin social cohesion.
