hi i am thinking about buying... a laptop with these specs..
850 MHz Intel Celeron Processor
256 DRAM
20 GB harddisk
windows XP
will it be ok to run XP with office and that kind of stuff???
i have a much faster and better desk top for games i just want something to write essays, do some spread sheets and surf the net with from bed jejejeje lazy me

That will run XP easily enough although it won't be very punchy.

An extra 256Mb of RAM (cheap as chips from Crucial / Kingston) will help no end.

As long as you are paying no more than 150 GBP for it then it is a good buy.

There are a lot of laptops on the market, at good prices that walk all over the specs you listed.

First, 256 RAM and XP is a no no, maybe 512, 1GB is excellent.
Most users overlook the fact that XP has a lot of subsystem programs running in the background that supports XP. They all require RAM and use the Hard drive.

I'm just going to use it for, is a poor reason to purchase a poorly configured computer!

Your new computer should have a life cycle of 5 years without upgrades.

2 years from now, Mostly VISTA, 64bit Network over all, no single core machines being built, all dual core. Single core support out the window!

You do not have to buy the max, just consider the environment
computers must function in for the next 5 years!

Completly fine. If your only writting then you don't even need more RAM
