In the USA if a business is in the black, it is doing extremely well.If it's in the red, it's losing money. Thanksgiving always occurs on a Thursday and the next day is when the shopping for Christmas is done. Millions of dollars are made on that one day;more than any day in the year. Since businesses do well on this day, it was dubbed Black Friday. Have a nice Thanksgiving.

Retailers make most of the year's money during the holidays. The day after Thanksgiving is the kick-off day of the holiday shopping season. The idea is it takes them out of the red (negative profits) and into the black (positive profits).

Black versus Red. Black being in the money, Red being out of the money. Black for more financial gains and red for the opposite.

Because on that day, they sell so much merchandise that their sales figures move into the black (which means they are making more than they are spending).
It isn't a black-white thing, if that's what you were thinking.
