Illness as there was no way to fight it and few people, even doctors totally understood what caused it

Knowledge of bacteria, infection and hygiene were not anywhere near fully developed and many women, for instance, died in childbirth for no other reason than poor hygiene at the birth, leading to infection, fever and death.

Ther are reports of doctors going straight from the examination and autopsy of a corpse to delivering a baby, still wearing the same clothing and not having "sterilised" their hands or instruments. Instant recipe for tragedy.

Cholera (which we know is caused by contaminated drinking water) was thought to be caused by inhaling a "bad smell". In a way this was right as stagnant water does give off a bad smell, but they hadn't actually made the connection that cases of cholera usually involved sewage leaking into drinking water.

Although things were improving by the late 1700s and medical science was moving towards a greater understanding of these things it was nowhere near yet sufficient to prevent such tragedies happening.

Taking a bath, I am not really sure, but will continue to research what year and where the, (I think) Jesuits told the British that bathing was unhealthy. I read this a long time ago and now am curious to find out the explanation. Sorry I did not properly answer your question, but I have this to search and occupy my time for a while. Thank you.
