There are various reasons. There is the force of habit as mention aboved. Also, sometimes a player will like to take it out to briefly say something to an opponent or player where there is no obstruction in their speech. Some players have too much accumulation of saliva and chose to spit as a habit. Rarely, players also get hit so hard that their mouthpieces are displaced where they have to re-adjust it for comfort. But the habit thing is probably the most common reason
