I hate people who insist on giving their houses stupid names. Having worked in call centres, it makes it really difficult to find out what there address is and then they get arsey at you because the want something collected or delivered and the delivery bolke can't find them.
If you work in a call centre you can tell if someone is going to say "It's not a number, it's a name actually" before they say it.
My best friend's mum insists on naming her houses and she's weird (and not in a good way).
And finally it's never anything original.

Can you convince me otherwise or do you agree that if numbers are good enough for the rest of us, that snobby middle-class morons who think this is a witty and original way to express their individuality should have to make do?

I do acknowledge that people in some rural areas don't have houes numbers (I know a very small village in Norfolk where everyone has a name instead of a number. I don't have a problems with this - if you do a postcade search these are generally picked up. It's people who move in and put up a sign announcing that they now wish their has to be known as whatever that bug the hell out of me.

I live on the very outskirts of a village in the middle of no where, my house has a name, there is little point in it having a number, as the nearest house to it is about 11 miles away, the next nearest about 17 miles and the next nearest is in the next county. It is much easier for people to ask where say "Rose Cottage" is in any case ,the name of a property is on the Ordnance Survey Map, a number is not. It has nothing to do with snobbery. It is the only way you can find isolated places.

Good: Have a good work out. All my buses came on time (which never happens.. stupid transit). Had a nice lunch. Got to sleep in. Watched prison break, as I am watching the series now. Bad: Didn't see any of my friends today which is the first time in a long time.. but it was a nice break I guess. Couldn't get in contact with a doctor that I really need to see (horrible receptionists).

I agree entirely with your main point.
I have to say, however, that there are some other people, who I would never be as insensitive as to describe as morons, who do not know that if a road is not "adopted", as most are, by local authorities for ownership and maintenance purposes, the houses are not given numbers and therefore HAVE to give the houses names to identify them.
And they don't have to be middle class either.

Unless it is a huge pile, no point in giving it a pretentious name. Like Thistledome (this'll do me). Or mixing two names which is gross and never works like Julidon etc. Its like owning a Council House and then ripping out the perfectly innocent front door to mark your badge of ownership. Poor buggers I can't stand them either. Middle class golfers yuck, female golfers hell.

I don't think it is only 'snobby middle class' people who like to call their houses by names however i do have better things to do with my time than to name my house. However if i ever did decide to i would probably adopt my neighbours name that they have for their house which is 'Uppem hall' couldn't think of anything better.

Definitely bad. Numbers just aren't good enough for some people.

Really good question, by the way.

whats the point in giving your house a name,do you expect it to answer you when you call it, perhaps they need to get a pet or a baby, if they have to call their house by a name then that name should be "home"

I know of a couple who've named their house 'Davian'. He's David, she's Gillian. Unforgivable!
