The early Vikings were Scandinavian people who arrived in 982 AD to Greenland. They were different from later settlers in that they didn't cause destruction of Native populations. Because they were from a colder climate it is believed that they didn't carry many of the diseases that later decimated Native populations. They created settlements throughout Newfoundland and Greenland, however the reason for their dissapearance is still unknown. Their first settlement occured in Greenland but they called it Vinland (founded by Leif Ericcson, an outlaw). They also used the term Skraeling for Native populations, they feared these populations so trading among each group did not occur. Because of this, violent interactions rarely occured, there is documented evidence though that some tension and warefare still happened. Their settlements can still be found today however the burials found to not account for the entire population.

Early Vikings in Europe were characterized as having small farm settlements. They were also excellent fisherman and hunters. During the Viking Age, they were renouned for their shipbuilding and sailing abilities, in fact they are said to have been the best in the world. They were pagans who based their beliefs around Norse gods. They were also known for raiding the coasts of Europe. They often built settlements where they raided. They had a thirst for adventure, new settlement popped up because of this but also because of overpopulation and dissention among the group.

Hope this helps!
